"The home is the child's first school,
the parent is the child's first teacher,
and reading is a child's first subject."

Alphabet Knowledge
Alphabet knowledge consists of being able to recognize and name letters, identify the sounds of letters, produce the letters, and match text letters with their sounds. In order for someone to read, they need both knowledge of the language and an understanding of the text systems and symbols. The 26 letters of the alphabet are the foundation of the English language. Knowing the letter names is one predictor of later reading success. It is important that a child is able to have more than a simple knowledge of the alphabet (i.e. only being able to recite the alphabet song). A child needs to become comfortable with the letters of the alphabet and be able to identify the letters in different fonts and type case, as well as handwritten letters. Two ways children can learn about letters is by matching the letter sounds to the letter names and by learning about the shapes of the letters prior to learning the letter names.
