"The home is the child's first school,
the parent is the child's first teacher,
and reading is a child's first subject."
-Barbara Bush
What is Emergent Literacy?
The process of emergent literacy begins at birth and typically develops up through 3rd grade. As a child engages in early learning experiences with books and language, a foundation is created which can help with later success in reading and writing (Gipe, 2014).

-Emergent literacy is NOT one skill that is directly taught.-

-Literacy IS a continuously developing process that takes years, sometimes a lifetime to fully develop.-

As the child grows and works to understand more sophisticated language, they depend on adults to give them opportunities to engage in and be surrounded by literacy (Temple, Ogle, Crawford, & Temple, 2018).

If a child is growing up in a community where reading and writing is occurring, they are going to learn about language and have the opportunity to explore language prior to entering school.
